Tom Seaden, who was resident in Hall from 1982-1985 and JCR President 1983/84,
died suddenly last week of a heart attack.  He was 45.  Tom's Memorial Service
will be held on Monday 17 November, 11am, Christ Church, Virginia Water, Surrey
GU25 followed by refreshments at Wentworth Golf Club, Virginia Water. 
Family flowers only but donations can be made to Great Ormond Street Hospital

56th Reunion Dinner and AGM

The 56th Reunion Dinner will be held at Kenwood Hall Hotel on Saturday 11th October 2008. This year's event will take the form of a Formal Dinner.

The evening will start after the AGM with the Library Bar open from 7pm, followed by the menu below in the Terrace Room at 7:30pm. Afterwards, the Library Bar will be open until midnight.

The AGM will take place at 5pm in the Library Bar. All members are encouraged to participate!

A Message from the President

Dear Association Member,

The Stephenson Hall Association newsletter will be sent out later this year than is usual, as you may have noticed from its absence from your inbox/letterbox. The main reason for this is that this years reunion meal is not going to be held at Stephenson. It was a tough decision but with the changes that have taken place in the Hall it was felt by the committee that it was time to try something new. As we are no longer tied to the academic calendar we can hold the event at any time during the year, but we are still holding the event in Sheffield. Just to give you forewarning before the newsletter is sent out, the reunion dinner will be held at Kenwood Hall, Sheffield on the 11th October. Further details including prices will be in the newsletter. Accommodation at Kenwood Hall can be booked through their website, again further details will be in the newsletter. Apologies for the late notice on this, but by the time we were looking for a venue "wedding season" had already started, and as you can imagine most venues were booked up well in advance.

As usual we are looking for contributions from members to be published in this year's news section of the newsletter. Why not email us a few lines now to let your friends from when you were in Hall know what you've been up to over the past months? It needn't be anything fancy - just a couple of lines summary to newsletter@stevo.org.uk would be great. The deadline for receipt of any items for the newsletter has to be 15th August - so there's not that much time. Thanks for reading - I look forward to receiving your news and seeing as many of you as possible later this year.

We have been asked by Charlotte Goodbody, this years Hall Ball chair, to send this message to all registered SHA members. We hope it will be of interest to more recent Stephenson leavers, especially those who are still living locally.

Its that time of year again when Stephenson Hall opens its doors for the annual ball. This year's may be the final one so we would like to invite all Stevo members past and present to help us celebrate in style! The event is on 12th of May and will give a donation to "The Children's Appeal" a local charity.

Non meal tickets are £20 and include:

Unlimited candy floss
The Volcanoes (indie rock)
Straight Up (Music to suit all)
Drum and Bass DJ

Bucking Bronco

Lawn Games
Champagne and Strawberry Breakfast

The event is strictly formal suit and tie or black tie for the men, and formal dress for the ladies. Harold Brookes formal wear will be in Stephenson Reception on Thursday 3rd May hiring suits between 6pm and 7.30pm.

Travel Award Shortlist

The SHA Travel Award shortlist was announced by SHA President Adam Metcalf at the Stephenson Hall Foundation Dinner on 3 May. The 5 shortlisted entrants, from a total of 11 entries, are as follows:

The overall winner, along with two runners-up, will be announced at the Reunion ball on 11 June.

Stevo Tennis Courts to be Built On

As stated in the post ealier today, a planning meeting concerning the proposed Student Village takes place tomorrow, Tuesday 10 May 2005. This has a significant impact upon Stephenson Hall, in particular the loss of the tennis courts, dining hall and a move to self-catering accomodation.

UNIVERSITY OF SHEFFIELD
RESIDENCE STRATEGY APPLICATION

Dear Mr Sullivan,

I wish to object most strongly to the University's residence strategy application. I am a current resident of Stephenson Hall and have enjoyed the benefits associated with traditional Hall life.

If the proposals are allowed to proceed in their current form this will result in the destruction of Hall environments and the associated facilities which go hand in hand.

If the proposed development were to go ahead at Stephenson it would mean loss of the on site social facilities, having to walk to a central hub to obtain meals, loss of the tennis courts, which are an important amenity used extensively by students and general degradation of the the social and community spirit.

There are also major concerns over the suitability of the proposed buildings for incorporation into the Broomhill conservation area.

May I request that the City councilors reject this application in its current form totally, and insist that any future submission by the University is more in keeping with the local environment and recognises that many students wish to spend their first year away from home in a traditional Hall environment.

Student Village Planners Meeting

We recieved this email over the weekend regarding the University's Student Village Plans. More soon...

Hello,

I am a local resident on Southbourne Road, with an accommodation business called Corner House on the corner of Southbourne/Westbourne roads. I am therefore well switched in to your views regarding the Student Village.

Just in case you haven't been contacted a dozen times already........

There's to be the deciding meeting when the Planners are to advise the Councillors to accept the Student Village plans on TUESDAY 10th MAY at 2pm at the Town Hall.

It is hoped that as many as possible can meet on the steps of the Town Hall at 1.30 to show the Councillors that there is solid oppposition to the plans. We are allowed into the meeting, and it is hoped that there will be so many it will cause a problem!!! If you have someone who can speak at the meeting on behalf of Stephenson Hall, that would be great. The Uni talk of 'choice,' meaning the city centre and village sites, but most people would say they are reducing choice by removing the traditional Halls facilities, which most people will be presuming to remain. I don't think the plans make this at all clear.

Do you have a phalanx of students and staff who could be available? Placards?

Let's hope your firework display on Saturday has something to celebrate.

53rd Reunion Ball!

This year, Sheffield University celebrates its Centenary. As part of the University-wide celebrations, the SHA is going to play its part by holding a Ball in place of the usually smaller annual Reunion Dinner.

The Ball will be held on 11th June 2005, and will take a similar form to that held three years ago to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the opening of Stephenson Hall. The important thing now is to book tickets - in 2002 they sold out months before the event!

The upcoming reunion (11 June 2005) will celebrate 100 years of the University of Sheffield and will take a similar form to the Stevo 50 years celebration that was held in 2002. The University's development plans may mean that this is one of the last years we are able to hold the event in Stevo itself.
